How do I Troubleshoot my Wireless Network?

Of all the network solutions available, wireless internet gives you the freedom to be online without the need for extensive cabling. However, wireless internet is also more vunerable to cyber attacks – particularly if it has been inactive for long periods.  If you are having trouble with your wireless network, the following list of network support pointers should help to set you right.

1) Power cycle the system by shutting it down and switching it back on after 30 seconds.

2) Try checking the network settings to verify the IP address and other related information.

3) Determine whether the network card is working adequately.Try to identify the malfunctioning adapter by disabling the cards one by one.

4) Try moving a portable host (e.g ypur laptop) closer to the router.  If it works better, interference of low signal strength is the reason for the poor internet access.

5) Check the functionality of the wireless router and access points.Try adjusting the antenna to get an optimum signal. Most wireless routers should come with omni-directional antennae so that they are able to send signals in all directions – a situation appropriate for a square shaped network.

6) Check the location of the router and access point. They should ideally be placed centrally between all of the computers in the network.

7) Examine the signal strength by using the monitoring utility that typically comes with the access point.

8) Check your devices are showing all of the correct lights. There is no universal standard to indicate wireless router functionality so check the devices manuals to see which lights indicates what function.

9) Use wireless internet utilities to check the SSIDs and channel’s neighbouring wireless networks are currently using.

10) Check that all the correct drivers have been installed.

11)  Check the configuration settings for encryption keys.

If you are still struggling then it can be a good idea to contact the manufacturer of your wireless router or a network supports solutions company.
