A recent review of the national curriculum for England's primary school has determined that IT and technology should be a brand new centre piece, given equal time to core subjects such as English and Maths.

Former chief inspector of schools, Jim Rose has made a number of recommendations including a new focus on speaking as well as listening skills. He also said that children should be able to begin school in the September after their fourth birthday. The report was commissioned amongst fears that school timetables had become too ‘cluttered’ has stressed the importance of computers in schools and in internet use in particular being ingrained into the curriculum from an early age.

This focus on the importance of the use of IT and computers in schools was brought to light in early April when the new proposals were misinterpreted by many media outlets as ‘teaching Twitter in schools’.The real plans aim to educate children in several aspects of computer usage, from computer presentations to podcasting.

In his interim report, Sir Jim has suggested that there should be around six broader areas of learning as opposed to up to 14 more traditional individual subjects such as history, geography and science.

The underlying train of thought is that if ICT in schools was ignored, a generation of children not versed in all things digital could emerge. It is the opinion of some people concerned that this would be detrimental to an economy that relies heavily on the IT and digital sectors.

Teaching unions have been welcoming of the proposed changes which have been the most radical shake up of the curriculum in 20 years, but have continued to criticize the curriculums seeming overreliance on testing of children. Some MPs have also welcomed the changes provided that they weren't brought in at the expense of 'dumbing down' the curriculumm, insisting that the proposals shouldn't prioritize 'headline grabbing gimmicks' at the expense of bettering children's education.

I guess we have all been there at some point, you type up a nice e-mail and attach a few (what you thought were) photos taken on you latest 10 or 20 megapixel camera and then press the send button. After you wait what seems like an age you then get a message telling you that the file is to large, how annoying is that?. The problem is though that large file transfer is an issue.

If you travel for business, this can be a huge problem, as you may need to be sending large files all the time.

As a local business sending large files and photos can be a problem so I spoke to my local computer repair company who were very helpful and gave me some very sound advice.

Videos are becoming increasingly common way of distributing data as well but even though compression technology has come a long way enabling files to be smaller, a video will often exceed the ISP (internet service providers) e-mail file size limit, so often files can be lost.

When you are sending large files, you have to find a source other than your email to do so. There are many sites that will help you with this, and some are geared towards business use.

Large files aren’t necessarily restricted to e-mails though as business often need to share other types of data, for example geographic maps or computer aided design files which even in lightweight form can be very large. The methods of file transfer will of course vary from FTP type sites to sites that send a link to the recipient and make the file available for download for a set period of time.

In reality there are a wide range of providers offering these services which at one time was simply unheard of, but in true business fashion where there is a demand then you can be sure someone will come up with a solution.

There will of course be a number of considerations you will need to take into account when using these types of service. Cost is one factor but equally important is the security of the data you are sending. Is the service you choose to use an established provider with defined data protection protocols in place for example.

If sending large files for business is an ongoing and increasing problem then it may be more cost effective to try and find an alternate in house solution. The advantage of course is that on the one hand the ongoing cost could be less, but more importantly you will be sure that your data will be as secure as it can be in your own hands.

For the time being , depending whether you need a business or home user large file sending service at least now you know that there are such services available online if you find your self in need of a quick fix or an ongoing solution.
